October is Crime Prevention Month! In September, several unlocked vehicles in our community were entered and subsequently had items taken from them. By working together, we can minimize these crimes of opportunity.

• Beep before you sleep
  • Doors should remain locked while windows and sunroofs should never be left opened or cracked open. Do not leave your unlocked vehicle running outside. 
• All valuables should be out of sight
  • If removable, take all valuables with you. If it can’t be removed, store them in the vehicle’s trunk. (i.e. GPS, phones, laptops, purses, change)
• Do not leave vital information in your car
  • Items such as birth certificates, titles, firearms or bank cards should never be left in a vehicle. 

At home, keep those doors and windows locked when not in use. It is recommended that your driveway and entrance points to your residence are well lit. Motion detectors and bright flood lamps are a safe and efficient way to ensure these spaces get the most light and attention in case a burglar is outside your home. Keep lights on overnight. 

Remember, locks and alarms can’t prevent a burglary unless they’re being implemented. Establish a routine or check list every time you leave your residence, locking doors, windows and setting alarms.
