The Spring Hill City Council approved an ordinance Sept. 24 to allow golf carts on certain streets within the Spring Hill city limits. The ordinance will go into effect Wednesday, Sept. 30 after publication in the local newspaper, the Miami County Republic. 

With golf carts now permitted on streets with speed limits of 25 mph or less, keep in mind these key limitations and regulations:

• Operator must have valid, unrestricted driver’s license
• Owner must maintain insurance for the golf cart in the same amounts set forth for motor vehicles
• Permits are not required to operate a golf cart
• Golf carts allowed on streets between sunrise and sunset unless equipped with lights as required by state and local law for motorcycles
• Number of occupants limited to number of seats factory installed
• Golf carts prohibited on sidewalks and jogging trails
• Golf carts must have four wheels, a unladen weight of not more than 1,800 pounds, designed to not be operated at no more than 25 mph and designed to carry no more than six persons including the driver. 
• Golf carts cannot cross U.S. 169.

In July, the City conducted an informal poll on the City’s social media accounts and website to consider the idea of allowing golf carts to drive certain streets throughout the City. 774 people responded to the poll of which 74 percent were in favor of allowing golf carts on certain City streets. Of those who voted in favor of golf carts, the most important factors to consider were licensed drivers only and insurance required on the golf carts.

In August, the Governing Body again asked for public feedback on a proposed golf cart ordinance and discussed the item further at the Aug. 27 and Sept. 10 City Council meetings, which are available for viewing on the City's YouTube channel.
