[ARCHIVED] Civic Center project awarded grant

The Spring Hill Civic Center revitalization will get a boost from the federal government.

Recently, the City of Spring Hill was awarded $50,000 from the Community Development Block Grant program for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements to the Civic Center.

Spring Hill was one of five communities in Johnson County to receive funding from the program. Other communities included Olathe, Merriam, De Soto and Edgerton.

ADA improvements will come in the form of reconstruction of restrooms, new sidewalks, parking and entrance doors, and Reception Hall renovations. Previously, the Civic Center was not ADA compliant, which brought the need for improvements to make the building usable for all residents.

The Civic Center is visited daily by seniors utilizing the Neighbors Place, a meal program, and many other organizations and groups throughout the day and evening. The residents who utilize walking assistance equipment and those physically disabled should benefit the most from the ADA improvements.

The overall Civic Center revitalization will include upgrades to the gymnasium — making it usable year-round — and public meeting rooms, Reception Hall renovations including a new kitchen, new City Council and Municipal Court chambers and renovated City Hall offices among other projects.
