[ARCHIVED] Aquatic Center gears up for end of season parties

Luau edit with words

As the season winds down, the Spring Hill Aquatic Center is winding up.

With only three weeks left in the season, the Aquatic Center has two events in the lineup to round out the summer season.

On Aug. 5 and Aug. 6, the Spring Hill Aquatic Center plans to host a new event, Small Business Weekend. In one-hour or two-hour slots, area small businesses will brave the heat underneath the Aquatic Center’s cabanas to get the word out about what they have to offer in Spring Hill. The two-day event aims to promote the local economy by providing a space for businesses to advertise their goods and services as well as allowing patrons to shop while they enjoy the Aquatic Center. Though the deadline to reserve a business space has passed, there isn’t a deadline to shop and support Spring Hill’s small businesses.

After Small Business Weekend winds down, staff will be gearing up for its biggest party of the season, the Fifth Annual Family Luau, a Spring Hill family favorite. From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 12, the Aquatic Center will be transformed into a tropical paradise. Decorations, games, music and more will make a Kansas summer’s sweltering evening feel more like a warm night on the coast. Staff plans to host hula hoop games, a diving board contest and a limbo accompanied with island music on steel drums by Bryan Alford, a staple at past luaus. As the party begins to wind down, the Spring Hill Recreation Commission will offer a free showing of Disney’s newest animated film, Moana, at dark in neighboring Aquatic Center Park. Throw a towel down or bring a chair, dry off and enjoy a tropical showing under a summer night sky.

But don’t towel off just yet. On Aug. 13, the Aquatic Center will open noon to 6 p.m. for its final day of operation for the summer. Soak up the sun one last time before school begins and leaves start to change.
