[ARCHIVED] Police department gifts handmade quilt

Alexander Goodwin, The Midlands, United Kingdom, smiles in front of a quilt presented by Spring Hill Police Chief Richard Mann, Assistant Police Chief Brian Holmes and Anna Sparks, administrative assistant, June 16 in Kansas City, Kansas. The quilt, made by Debbie Hickman, Spring Hill, features 90 patches from area law enforcement agencies as well as some across the country including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Key West Police Department.

Goodwin, the son of a United Kingdom police officer, was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma in his right femur last year and came to the United States to receive treatment at the University of Kansas Hospital, where he has remained with his family.

Since his arrival last year, Goodwin has been surrounded by area law enforcement to make him feel more at home. Upon his arrival, Sparks thought of the quilt idea and presented it to Hickman, who spent about six months stitching the queen-size blanket. At the presentation, Sparks told Goodwin, “On your very bad days, wrap up in [the quilt] and this is all our hugs coming to you.”
