Did you have an unusually low water consumption on your December billing and an unusually high reading on your January billing? On their December utility bills, some customers were billed for less water consumption than they actually used. While the January readings are correct, they may look higher than normal usage.
City staff has completed many manual re-reads of meters to confirm that the January readings are correct, and we are working with outside vendors to find a reason why the December readings were too low.
In most cases, the low readings from December and the higher readings from January average to a normal reading for a winter month in that household. For example, if your normal consumption was 4,000 gallons, but your bill shows consumption of 1,000 gallons in December and 7,000 gallons in January, that would average out to 4,000 gallons.
If you are affected by this and would like to meet with City staff, please call (913) 592-3664 to schedule an appointment over the phone or in person. This will allow staff to look at your account in detail before reviewing it with you.
In some cases, our meter crew did find leaks when re-reading meters, and those customers have been notified as such. However, if you think that you may have a leak, please call Utility Billing to schedule a meter evaluation.
If you have had a leak or water pipe break, please complete the water leak appeal form and submit it to Utility Billing at City Hall. Our program offers 50% relief for excess water used due to the leak or broken pipe.
Payment arrangements may be available for those who may not be capable of paying an unusually high bill pending account review by City staff.
