"Work Zones are temporary. Actions behind the wheel can last forever."
As we observe National Work Zone Awareness Week, it's crucial that Spring Hill drivers take action to prioritize safety in work zones on city streets and highways.
Road construction and maintenance workers have a dangerous job. They're working alongside moving traffic in order to improve the roads for you. To ensure the safety of road construction and maintenance workers during projects, we urge drivers to follow these essential tips:
- Slow down
- Ditch the distractions
- Expect delays
- Follow traffic control instructions
- Do not attempt to pass when passing is prohibited
- Increase the distance between you and the car in front of you
According to data from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), there were 1,482 crashes in work zones in 2023 across the state. Driver-related contributing circumstances were reported in 92% of all work zone crashes. The most common included:
- Inattention
- Followed too closely
- Improper lane change
- Right of way violations
- Too fast for conditions
The majority of crashes in 2023 happened in daylight with no adverse driving conditions.
Warmer weather is favorable for road projects. With the summer months ahead, please do your part to keep road workers and other drivers safe in work zones. KDOT's blog shares stories of KDOT workers and their families experiencing the unimaginable.
Spring Hill Public Works Director, Jacob Speer, reminds residents that performing street maintenance work can be dangerous, and relies on drivers to have patience and respect for the workers. " My wish is that our public servants go home to their family safely every evening. I appreciate the National Work Zone Awareness campaign and the efforts of motorists everywhere to help that wish come true," Speer says.
The City of Spring Hill is grateful for the Spring Hill Public Works Department, KDOT, and various road maintenance and construction companies who invest time and effort into improving our city's infrastructure. Their dedication ensures safer roads, smoother commutes, and a better quality of life for all residents. We deeply appreciate their hard work, and commitment to our community.
Parents - please discuss work zone driving safety with your young drivers.
