Water Meters: Reading, Testing, Installation
The City of Spring Hill uses two types of water meters — touch read and radio read. The touch read system was introduced in the city in the early 1990s and allowed staff to read meters without opening the meter lids, which improved accuracy and saved time.
New radio read meters are replacing all touch read meters that are more than 10 years old. The radio read meters transmit readings which allow City staff to drive through the city and pick up the reading via a radio signal through a handheld device. The Public Works Department's goal is to convert all water meters over to radio read meters, which would enhance efficiency, improve accuracy, and allow meters to be read regardless of weather conditions.
Whenever a Spring Hill resident feels he or she has received an inaccurate water meter reading, City staff conducts an inspection and rereads the meter. When a customer disputes the City's findings, they may request that the meter be tested.
However, as stated in Section 16-109, Paragraph 8 in the City's Water Rules and Regulations: if the meter tested within the standards recommended by the American Water Works Association, the customer will be responsible for the cost of the meter testing. For additional information, please view the City of Spring Hill's Water Rules and Regulations.
The City of Spring Hill will provide the meter, meter setter, saddle, corporation valve, meter pit, ring, and lid. The applicant's contractor is responsible for all copper piping and the installation of the setter, meter pit and the tapping of the City water main.
Prior to backfilling of the new service installation, the applicant's contractor must call the Spring Hill Utilities Division and request an inspection of the installation. For further clarification of the water meter installation guidelines, please view the City of Spring Hill's Water Rules and Regulations, Section 16-109 Meters.
